Anyone?
My right leg is done from hip to ankle, and I want to carry the design down over the top of my foot. Found out that quite a few shops around here won't work on feet.
Wondered what and how the healing time is, if you must sucumb to flip flops when shoes are a necessary, scabbing, etc.....

Re: foot tatoos
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 3:07 PMMy immediate reaction - the PAIN!! My first tattoo is on my ankle over the ankle bone and down the top of my foot. It was extremely painful and took a really long time to heal. I lost a lot of ink just from my shoe rubbing it and had to have it touched up a few times. It also made my foot swell up to almost twice the size. Ick. The swelling went down by the second day though.
I love the way it looks, but it was definitely a tough way to start! All my other tattoos paled compared to that pain though.
I'd recommend doing it when you have a few days to spend sitting around at home with it up in the air and definitely invest in a pair of comfy flip-flops because you'll be wearing them a LOT.
good luck - post a pic when you get it done! -

Re: foot tatoos
Fri, June 17, 2005 - 3:21 PMI admit, mine is fairly small -- just the I Ching -- but I didn't have that much discomfort, and the swelling wasn't that bad. It might depend on how intricate a design you're after. Flip flops are a good idea if you decide to do it.

Sat, June 18, 2005 - 5:22 AMhmmm
Have to think on it again. The design is just an abstract swirl that now ends below the ankle bone. (Will post a pic of tat in my pics soon) It's not too intricate, yet I'd imagine the pain would be quite severe. The ankle bone on mine proved to be quite challenging. -

Re: foot tatoos
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 10:07 AMi had an octopus done across my entire right foot. it wasn't the most comfortable thing i have ever willing subjected myself to but for me. it was well worth any discomfort. i too, had to have it redone some from ink loss, but overall it has held up well. be prepared for some swelling. i made sure that i wore very loose shoes (when i had to wear them) and left the shoe untied on that foot. for the most part i went sans shoes and kept my leg raised as much as possible. i made sure to keep triple antibiotic oinment on it for about a week. other than that, scabbing and such was pretty much what you would expect from a tattoo. i've considered having something done on my other foot, but haven't come up with anything tha really appeals to me at the moment.

Re: foot tatoos
Sat, July 9, 2005 - 7:13 PMWhen I was contemplating getting my first tattoo, the artist said that she could do foot tattoos, but the shop wouldn't guarantee them (normally they guarantee and would do touchups within 1 year). I think she said it was something about the skin healing too fast and the tattoo either spreads or fades, though I could be a little off there...

Re: foot tatoos
Sat, July 16, 2005 - 11:05 AMI looked for a pic of that beautiful-sounding tattoo you introduced to us and didn't find one in your album. :(
Sounds lovely though. I'm looking for inspiration for my own next tattoo. :) -

Re: foot tatoos
Sat, July 16, 2005 - 1:32 PMmy foot tat is my favorite one!! and it didn't hurt as much as everybody said it would! I had many people scaring me on how much pain it was.... I thought that was one of my easiest tattoos!!
And the color is very bright., not to mention i get the most comments about it!!
Took about a week to heal.. I had to wear a booty on my foot, most of the time I went bare foot (which was kinda tough when working in an office) but I did it as much as I could so that I would not do anything to damage my tat. -

Re: foot tatoos
Sun, August 14, 2005 - 2:55 AMOn my right foot I have a tat of plumeria flowers just above my toe cleavage.
I love having a tat there, but I will admit that I have almost completely lost the tips of two of the flower petals within the first year and the color of this tat isn't as bright as the rest of my tats :( in fact it is dull in comparison to the one on my heal different skin texture I suppose. As for the healing time I didn't notice that it lasted very long and for me the pain was not crazy. ...the rib cage was crazy not the foot.
Oh by the way this is my first post here ......I'll postr pics of my tootsies now!

Re: foot tatoos
Tue, August 16, 2005 - 10:18 AMsee, mine didnt hurt... it was wierd feeling because of the vibrations.... although healing was a bitch. my foot swelled really bad, and i could onyl wear flip flops...
i have had may artists tell me they wont work on feet, becase the cell regrwoth rate is much higher than normal skin... as for the hands too. so tattoos must be touched up more often and stuff. i have no real problems with mine, but i know many that so. so it is all up to you

Re: foot tatoos
Tue, August 23, 2005 - 9:09 AMi have tattoos on the top of both of my big toes that I really love! Of my five tattoos (thigh, neck, lower back) , the toes hurt the most. I ended up not being able to let them heal like they should have (went camping two days later, got dusty feet, had to wash them every two seconds) but I am pretty sure that no matter how I let them heal, they would still lose ink over time. When you find a shop that will do toes, they most likely will not do free touch-ups (which they will sometimes do for tattoos on other parts of the body). However, I will always love my toe tattoos.
yours sounds beautiful--go for the foot!

Re: foot tatoos
Tue, August 23, 2005 - 7:34 PMI've got a toe tat. I remember it healing fast...i'm guessing increased circulation due to walking?? I had to wrestle with the girl who did it. According to her, hands and feet tats don't wear well over the years. We lose skin at a faster rate on our hands and feet than on the rest of our bodies.
Mine is 10 years old, and it's a little murky around the edges, but it was never a very well defined piece due to it's size.
As to pain...it was my easiest..but it is on my toe..not the top of my foot.
I'd say go for it!

Re: foot tatoos
Thu, September 15, 2005 - 6:33 AMThanks to everyone for their insight, I have yet to make the appointment, I have to decide soon before winter hits here, to give it time to heal before bundling the tat up under socks and shoes. I did wonder how they fared after a few years, if touch-ups would be needed sooner. -

Re: foot tattoos
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 2:45 PMOh foot tattoos.
I was a shop girl for a few years, and the speeches I'd have to give on this one...
The big thing with why a lot of shops aren't so into doing foot tattoos is simple. Most people don't know what they are getting into, thus when they are healing, they don't care about it as much as they should, tattoo gets wrecked, people get sad/pissy, call the shop, bitch out the artist, etc. Way too much drama.
So that being said, I can give you some advice based on my own personal experience.
Make sure your foot is in good shape before you go in for your appointment- use lotion, get it and soft and supple.
The tattoo itself is probably not going to hurt as much as you'd expect. Yeah, there's tendons and nerves, etc. down there, but its not the worst tattoo I had.
It's going to swell. A lot. I'd recommend taking an anti-inflammatory or two before your session, and a couple after. Try and stay off your feet for the rest of the day, keep that new tattoo elevated and ice it a few times- bag of frozen peas works well. Ice it for 15 minute intervals.
Shoes and socks- if you are going to be wearing socks, number one, make sure they are fresh'n'clean. Number two, try to avoid sport socks, those terry kind with the little nubbins in the inside- if your foot decides to lymph at all these'll get glued to your tattoo and could rip out all that hard work. In the event you do get a sock stuck to your tattoo wear it into the shower with you, get it soaked, should be easy to carefully peel off then. Wear loose shoes, flip flops work well as long as the straps don't rub on your tattoo.
Aside from that, it's basically the same as healing any other tattoo: keep it clean, don't pick at it, don't touch it when you don't have to, keep it dry, moisturize only when necessary with water-based unscented lotion... And caring for it afterwards is the same as any other tattoo also, be adement with the SPF!!
Mine is 3 years old, still bright and pretty as ever! Only place that I had a problem healing is one line where my flip flop rubbed (nuts!).
Good Luck!

Thu, October 27, 2005 - 11:55 AMWell, here I go, 4 months after I started this thread. Going to go to a local artist and see what he thinks, as far as a design goes. Leave it to me to wait until sock weather. Thanks to everyone for the advice. There was so much I didn't think of, and I'm much more prepared. I'll post pics when it's done....

Wed, February 1, 2006 - 1:10 PMI just got my very first tat done in October, on my foot (duh). I really didnt find it hurt that bad, I mean I have had better feelings but gone through worst pain. I wore flip flops for only a few weeks, foot didnt swell or anything only thing was that my whole foot itched like a b*tch. But I thought it was ok and I would def. get another one on my other foot. -

Re: foot tatoos
Fri, February 22, 2008 - 2:43 AMI just had both of my feet done on V-day, I'm not gunna lie it hurt like hell, and i know that i have a high pain tolerancy... it's been a week since I had them done and my tats are finally peeling, I took proper care of them so there isn't any scabbing, but I was worried because I noticed some fading, I looked it up and talked to a buddy of mine who is a tattoo artist and everytrhing said that this was normal and it should brighten up when it is completely healed. Also, i haven't been able to wear shoes this whole week and I didn't want to chance the strap of a flip flop rubbing on my tat either so I resorted to slippers haha, it's been working out nicely so I suggest that if you can get away with it at work. Pretty much the worst part is getting them done, after that they swell up which sucks, but they go down in a couple days, I've just been washing them with dial antibacterial and putting Lubriderm on them 4-5 times daily and it works well, it's definately worth the pain.... hope that helps. -

Re: foot tatoos
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 11:22 AMJust posted my foot tat to my pictures.....
it didn't swell unusually and, as I remember, the healing process was quite ordinary... there has been little to no fading (done in Hawaii in Dec of '06)... went with flip flops for a few days... as for the discomfort, this was my most challenging tat... took about 90 minutes and lets just say it ran a little "warm"... definitely one of my favorites and it gets many comments... -

Re: foot tatoos
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 8:15 AMMy foot tattoo was so painful that I saw dead relatives.
Every one of my other tattoos were completely fine...this one HURT.
It's probably a year old and perfect...no issues with color, fading, bleeding...you can see it in my photo album...
I did have swelling...but I'm a dancer and was on the foot the day after I inked...took a while to heal, but it's not surprising because of it's location...

Re: foot tatoos
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 1:33 PMi never had any problems with my foot. the only part that really hurt was the very, very top. i work as a custodian too, plus i got it done in winter, and really there is very little irritation, but flip flops are good when you can. -

Re: foot tatoos
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 8:28 PMHey everyone...I have enjoyed reading about all of your foot tattoo experiences!! Totally last minute to join and post, but I am getting a celtic shamrock design on my right foot tomorrow night!! Kinda scared...first tattoo!! Its hard to tell....so many say it hurts like hell...and others say its not so bad. By birthday is on Saturday the 15th and I intend to go out and live it up...just worried that I will fuck up my tattoo! I am quite worried about the pain...especially since this is my first one...but I do think it will be worth it! I hope! Super excited...and totally freaking out! If I get my tat on Monday....can I wear stilettos on Saturday? :-) I got some new fabulous shoes that only have a strap through the big toe...all the way to the ankle...so that should work. Any last minute advice? Thanks!!!

Re: foot tatoos
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 3:41 AMGo for it! I found a foot tattoo easier to reach than say a back tattoo, making them easier to care for. So far I've found the most painful place to be just over the ankle and the wrist. Foot tattoos look amazing. Definately worth it, and not any more hassle than anywhere else

Re: foot tatoos
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 3:46 PMSince this is almost 3 years old...I'm wondering if you ever got your foot done? I got mine done and it was over two hours of a lot of pain. I have a very high tollerance for pain and it hurt, but well worth it.

Re: foot tatoos
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 8:23 AMMy whole foot/ankle is covered w/ vines. One: the pain is hell...you get a foot tattoo and you can sit through *any* other tat like you were merely getting a massage. Two: the healing time is LOOOONNNG... I got mine 3 months ago and the top layer of skin still hasn't fully healed, and there was a good 3 weeks of scabbing hell. Flip flops, definitly your friend after, but remember that now we are moving into the warmer months and you can't have it exposed to sunlight for awhile. Hope thats somewhat helpful. I stil haven't finished my morning coffee, so my mind is working very quickly :) -

Sat, September 13, 2008 - 12:47 PMIn the UK they won't touch your face or hands, but will do feet. Odd. My friend told me that in the US if you get a tattoo on your face you can claim welfare under the mental health act as they assume your mad! I hope thats true. x Got any pics of your leg??
